Bagnall, Thomas (b. , d. 15 Apr 1851)
Note: Inquest (16 Apr 1851) verdict: suicide - took arsenic during temporary insanity.
Note: Staffordshire Advertiser, Saturday April 19, 1851:
+
PENKRIDGE,- DEATH FROM TAKING ARSENIC.- On Monday
evening last, a man named Thomas Bagnall, 50 years of age,
was seized with sickness, and, although medical assistance was
procured, he died about one o'clock the following morning. An
inquest was held on the body on Wednesday, before Mr. W.W.
Ward, coroner, when it was proved that the deceased had pur-
chased an ounce of arsenic about 5 o'clock on Monday after-
noon, and from a post mortem examination of the body by Mr.
Lister, surgeon, between 15 and 20 grains of arsenic were dis-
covered in the stomach. The deceased had been in the service
of Mr. Wedge, land agent, for 18 years, and during the last
fortnight had been rather singular in his conduct. The jury
returned a verdict that the deceased had taken arsenic whilst in
a fit of temporary insanity.
+
At the 1851 census, Thomas was living in his employer's house (Richard Wedge, +
Clay Street, Penkridge). He was stated to be unmarried, and his occupation was +
given as "Groom & Gardener".
