Bagnall, William John (b. 6 May 1831, d. 26 Apr 1910)
Note: Notes by Compiler - Rex Butler between 1999 &-2002

William his only forename at baptism, also on registration of death of sons +
Moses Aaron and Walter Valantine, also on his will and death certificate, but +
called William John on marriage certificate of his son Alfred Edward, and known +
as William John to Lin Kirby. Thought (by Lin Kirby) to have jumped ship from +
the "Albermarle", a notice in the NSW GG (New South Wales Government Gazette?) +
dated 29.7.53 refers to the desertion of a William Bucknell, an apprentice: +
this, Lin presumes, is William Bagnall. (From my father and Aunt Vera, I +
learned in childhood that William had jumped ship in Australia, stayed there +
for a while, returned to England, and then went back to Australia). However, A. +
Vera says she was told that William jumped ship in Perth, and made his way +
overland to NSW. (Lin thinks this very unlikely, saying too difficult at the +
time.) Lin Kirby says William returned to England twice, staying with his +
brother Alfred.
In 2001, I discovered he had married a Hannah Thompson at Christ Church, +
Stafford. Investigating further, I found that he was a prisoner in Stafford +
Gaol at the time of the 1851 census, his occupation being given as +
"wheelwright". Hannah was a housemaid (but not a prisoner) to the governor of +
the gaol at the same time.
