Bagnall, George (b. , d. 16 Nov 1872)
Note: STS RO F1354/1/22. Gravestone survives, but mostly unreadable because of +
spalling.
Note: His death certificate gives the cause of death as: "Knocked down by Engine of +
Passenger Train whilst he was standing on the Line. Head injured & right Jaw 4 +
Ribs of right side broken. Instant Dreath."
+
His grave is in Penkridge churchyard. The headstone is badly spalled, so the +
most of the text is missing. The following can be seen (or could be seen when +
I visited it in the 1970s): IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE OF GEORGE BA... who +
died at ... November ... Aged 34 [verse follows] Saviour ...rfect ... +
Stre...th ...n The....
+
At his marriage, the register gives his occupation as railway porter, and his +
abode as Stafford. At the baptism of his first child, Charles, George was +
still a railway porter, but now living at New Town. At the baptisms of his son +
George (January 1865) and daughter Mary Ann Louise (August 1867), he was +
recorded as being the railway station master at Penkridge. He was the +
informant of the birth of his daughter Elizabeth Sophia, when his occupation +
was recorded as "station master", presumably at Chelford, since this was an +
LNWR station, He registered the birth on 11 September, and so cannot have been +
station master at Greenfield for very long, at the time of his death.
NOTE: DETA LNWR Greenfield Station
OCCU: TITL railway stationmaster.
