When I first published details of Bagnall and the Post Office on the
web back in 1998 a number of people who I spoke to in the village remarked
to me that the life of Bagnall Village revolved around four centres:
The
Stafford Arms pub,
The Village Hall, St.
Chad' Church,and
the Post Office.
Although it had limited opening hours, the Post Office was an essential
part of village life.
As well as providing all the services one would expect from a sub-post office, it had much local information, such as local country walks, forthcoming village and local events, and it was a casual meeting place for all who chose to use it.
Sadly all changed early in 2001 and the Post Office in the village is
no more. The picture above is how it was in summer of that year. The
telephone box remains and is of a type designed by Sir Giles Gilbert
Scott in 1935 and is a Grade II listed building.
